The Queen’s 5th Coinage Portrait for The Royal Mint

Brief:

Win the external design competition to create the Queen’s Fifth Coinage Portrait and launch to the national and numismatic press.

Solution:

As Head of Design at the time I was able to influence the recruitment of new designers with both digital and traditional fine art skills, whilst relationship- building with the Secretary of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) to allow in-house submissions for Royal portrait competitions.

Results:

Royal Mint Engraver Jody Clark’s winning design was selected by the RMAC and approved by the Palace and was the first such design created with CAD and also the first time in over 100 years the successful designer was from the in-house team. The 5th Portrait was revealed at The National Portrait Gallery in London on March 2nd 2015 and now appears on the obverse of every UK coin struck today.

A 100 Year Wait.

For the first time in 100 years, an in-house Royal Mint engraver wins a Royal Portrait design competition.
